Iraq is now in a civil war.

Thirty thousand Iraqis have died there in the past three years, more than in many other conflicts widely recognized as civil wars. The number of internal refugees, mostly Sunni victims of ethnic cleansing, has exploded over the past few months, and now exceeds a quarter of a million people. (The Iraqi government says 240,000, but this doesn't include Iraqis who have fled abroad or who may not have registered their move with the government.)

The number of attacks on Shiite mosques increases every week: there have been 69 such attacks since February, compared with 80 in the previous two and a half years. And the war is being fought on gruesome new fronts. CBS News's Lara Logan has filed astonishing reports on the Health Ministry, which is run by supporters of radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

According to Logan, hospitals in Baghdad and Karbala are systematically killing Sunni patients and then dumping their bodies in mass graves.

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) asked a crowd of school children, parents and teachers who thought that the world was millions of years old to hold up their hands. According the AP, most people held up their hands. He then asked how many thought the Earth was only a few thousand years old? State Rep. Roger Koopman (R-Bozeman) gamely held up his hand. Schweitzer later suggested that the legislature did not need "people who think the Earth is 4,000 years old."

An infuriated Koopman retorted that the Governor as a supporter of evolutionary biology and geology is "bigoted." I wonder how Koopman will react when the Governor suggests that the Earth is not flat and is not at the center of the universe?

The Titanic Stayed the Course

For Bush this is a strategic failure of the first order.

The Bush-Cheney policy on North Korea was always what Fareed Zakaria once aptly called "a policy of cheap rhetoric and cheap shots." It failed. And after it failed President Bush couldn't come to grips with that failure and change course. He bounced irresolutely between the Powell and Cheney lines and basically ignored the whole problem hoping either that the problem would go away, that China would solve it for us and most of all that no one would notice.
