Bank losses to reach 1.6 TRILLION
Hedge fund Bridgewater Associates projects that total losses to the financial system from the credit crisis will reach $1.6 trillion. Note that losses taken to date are only $400 billion.
To put that into perspective, Vietnam cost the US 1.7 Trillion in todays dollars.

Rush Limbaugh actually said that "Bill O'Reilly is Ted Baxter."
From Wiki:
At dinner the night before, Bill O'Reilly's name came up, and Limbaugh expressed his opinion of the Fox cable king. He hadn't been sure at the time that he wanted it on the record. But on second thought, "somebody's got to say it," he told me. "The man is Ted Baxter."
Baxter was the overbearing, pompous anchorman for the fictitious station WJM-TV in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While his massive ego consistently fueled his dreams of grandeur, his actual performance was the reverse. A running joke of the show was Ted Baxter's incompetence, evidenced by a steady stream of mispronunciations, malapropisms, and mercurial displays of temper. Constantly in fear of being fired, Ted Baxter is, in fact, the only character of the show to survive the mass layoffs that featured in the final episode, a deft twist of plot that further cemented the satirical comment on mainstream media implicit in his character.

You assholes
Yea, we're just going to steal this post in whole.
Ed Burns, Vietnam vet and co-creator of HBO’s Generation Kill, interviewed in Salon:
How did working on this series affect your perspective on the war?
It didn’t. I still hate it. It just makes it more of a tragedy to know that we sent these guys into combat in the wrong war, on a make-up war. We wasted such talent on a lie. I know from Vietnam, when these guys are injured — guys who are really injured, the guy who steps on a mine or gets hit with an IED [improvised explosive device] — you know, he wants to believe that he gave it for the right cause. And you know, as time wears on, it’ll become more evident, just like it was in Vietnam, that it wasn’t the right cause. Yet that doesn’t bring his foot back or his arms back.
The best trained, best equipped army in the history of the world and you thought it was just your fucking toy to play around with, you incompetent half-wits? That these astonishing people were your little bauble? May you be drowned in the shit of history, post-haste. May your every contribution to this world be denied by all right-thinking people everywhere, forever. Happy fucking fourth of July.

Left Wing Base VS American People
The establishment class is so self-absorbed, so inculcated with faith in their own wisdom, that they automatically think that whatever they and their comrades believe is, by definition, what "the American people" believe, even when all empirical data proves that the opposite is true.
Fox News has been living a life beyond consequence for years.
At Fox News, media relations is a kind of rolling opposition research operation intended to keep reporters in line by feeding and sometimes maiming them. Shooting the occasional messenger is baked right into the process.
As crude as that sounds, it works. By blacklisting reporters it does not like, planting stories with friendlies at every turn, Fox News has been living a life beyond consequence for years.

McCain. Visiting Colombia. Hostages freed. Suspicions arise. Suspicions confirmed.
Leaders of the Colombian FARC rebel movement were paid millions of dollars to free Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages, Swiss radio said on Friday, quoting 'a reliable source'.
The 15 hostages released on Wednesday by the Colombian army 'were in reality ransomed for a high price, and the whole operation afterwards was a set-up,' the radio's French-language channel said.
Saying the United States, which had three of its citizens among those freed, was behind the deal, it put the price of the ransom at some $20 million.
The radio said its source was 'close to the events, reliable and tested many times in recent years.'
Buh buh buh BUT buh buh BUSH doesn't talk to or make deals with terrorists!
Racist Bigot Senator Jesse Helmes (republican) dies - His agenda is driven by a lifelong opposition to democracy and diversity.
How did someone so mean-spirited end up in a position to act on his divisive politics? For the most part, Helms wins political battles by keeping the spotlight on the morality plays he stages. To hear conservatives tell it, Helms is a personal friend of Jesus Christ, a populist defender of the little guy, and a bitter opponent of big government.
Shifting the spotlight reveals a different Helms. A former bank lobbyist whose fundraising machine has been fined for breaking federal campaign laws, Helms favors a big-spending, activist government--one that aids those in economic power. He voted to bail out the savings and loan industry, for example, and has seldom met a big-ticket missile system he didn't like. By contrast, he has voted to slash school lunches for impoverished children, medical care for disabled veterans, prescription drugs for the elderly, and wages for working families (see "On the record," below).
"Looking at the record, people ought to understand that Helms is not representing them on the great majority of issues," says Rep. Melvin Watt, a North Carolina Democrat. "They perceive that he stands up for the little guy, but he really stands up for rich people rather than poor and working-class people."

Methinks the gentleman (term applied loosely) knows not the difference between “patriotism” and “jingoism”. Perhaps the problem with the wingers derives from their lack of access to a good dictionary.

What he’s saying is that it’s more important to be patriotic to your country then your planet. That’s nuts. That’s also not patriotism, it’s nationalism. Repubs can’t make that distinction.

most conservative pundits and intellectuals aren't patriotic
Conservatives tend not to think of their anti-blue state biases as unpatriotic, because they like to portray them as tiny coastal enclaves totally unrepresentative of the "real" America." This is a common trick, based on the misleading fact that red state America consists of geographically large but low-population density places. The reality is that blue state America accounted for just over half the electorate in 2000, just under in 2004, and is probably above that now.
So if expressing contempt for the political and social mores of half of America is evidence of a lack of patriotism, then most conservative pundits and intellectuals aren't patriotic.

Glenn Greenwald is King Maker. (We're copyrighting the complete, future blog post in full right now.)
Glenn Greenwald has forced US politics. He's forced Obama's hand. Glenn Greewald is King Maker. Thank god he's Jedi and not Sith.
Glenn Greenwald: "The issue is that Obama has repeatedly, over the course of the last year, made emphatic commitments and clear statements about his own core political values that are completely irreconcilable with his support for the FISA bill. It's possible to recognize that someone is just a "politician" and still trust that they're essentially telling you the truth about what they think and what they'll do."
FUCK! He's even been on C-Span. Jedi King-Maker!
"Liberal Bloggers Accuse Obama of Trying to Win Election"
The liberal blogosphere was aflame today with new accusations that Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill) is trying to win the 2008 presidential election.
Suspicions about Sen. Obama's true motives have been building over the past few weeks, but not until today have the bloggers called him out for betraying the Democratic Party's losing tradition.
"Barack Obama seems to be making a very calculated attempt to win over 270 electoral votes," wrote liberal blogger Carol Foyler at LibDemWatch.com, a blog read by a half-dozen other liberal bloggers. "He must be stopped."
