Draft status

Buchanan served in ROTC while studying at Georgetown. In 1960, however, a District of Columbia draft board declared Buchanan 4-F, rejecting him from military service due to reactive arthritis. Five years later, he told a group of antiwar protesters, “All of you are here on a pass because of your (student) deferments.”
